Jeep Wrangler cargo storage: how to choose

There are four real ways to carry and lock gear in the back of a 4-door Wrangler. They suit different people and the price range is wide. Here is how they compare, including where each one is the wrong answer.

Steel deck enclosures

A welded steel box that fills the rear deck. The strongest option against brute force and usually the cheapest of the hard options.

Good for: maximum resistance, people who mostly drive with the top on, owners who want one fixed setup.

Watch for: weight, often well over a hundred pounds. Most rely on the closed tailgate to stay shut, so security drops when the Jeep is open. Powder coat chips and chipped steel rusts. Many models still exclude the 4xe.

Drawer systems

Sliding drawers on a platform, usually with a flat deck on top.

Good for: people who run the same kit every trip, long overland trips, anyone who wants gear at waist height.

Watch for: the most expensive option, the heaviest, and it costs vertical space. Rarely lockable to the same standard.

HDPE modular systems

A hard plastic box on an aluminium frame, with panels that move. This is what we build.

Good for: loads that change, topless and doorless driving, the 4xe, anyone who does not want to add serious weight.

Watch for: plastic is not steel. Against somebody with tools and time, steel wins. HDPE will not rust, will not dent and weighs a fraction as much, which is the trade we chose.

Soft options: bags, nets, tonneau covers

Good for: organization and keeping gear out of sight. Cheap.

Watch for: none of them are security. Treat them as tidying, not locking.

How to actually decide

Start with three questions. Do you drive with the top and doors off? If yes, you need something that locks on its own, which rules out most of the steel options. Does your load change week to week? If yes, you need panels that move rather than fixed drawers. Do you have a 4xe? If yes, check fitment first, because a lot of the market never redesigned for it.

Then, and only then, compare prices. Buying the cheapest option that does not fit how you use the Jeep is how most people end up buying twice.
